Overview:
The Axel Group is seeking a Landscape Designer for our client's team. This boutique ecological design firm specializes in coastal restoration, bioengineering, and sustainable landscape solutions across New England. The role offers a unique blend of technical design, site investigation, and on-the-ground project execution, providing an opportunity to work on complex coastal projects including erosion mitigation, dune stabilization, and shoreline restoration.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the production of ecological design plans, including Land Management Plans, coastal erosion mitigation strategies, bioengineering construction details, and native planting palettes.
  • Conduct detailed site investigations involving site visits, photo documentation, soil sampling, and delineation of project boundaries.
  • Collaborate with construction crews and on-site superintendents to resolve technical challenges and adapt project designs in real time.
  • Mentor junior team members by reviewing CAD drafts, planting layouts, and technical documentation.
  • Prepare and present permit applications, exhibits, and project designs before local Conservation Commissions in accordance with Wetlands Protection Act regulations.

Requirements:

  • 5 or more years of experience in landscape design, ecological restoration, or environmental planning, with a strong technical background.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator).
  • Knowledge of coastal ecology, bioengineering methods, invasive plant management, and native New England plant species.
  • Hands-on experience with permitting processes, including preparing Notice of Intent (NOI) packages and speaking at public hearings.
  • Professional Landscape Architect (PLA) license is a plus but not mandatory; strong design and technical restoration experience are essential.
  • Educational background in landscape architecture, ecology, botany, or environmental design; a Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) is highly preferred.

Compensation:
Salary ranging from $85,000 to $105,000

Additional Details:
This is a full-time, exempt position with a hybrid work schedule consisting of two days in the Orleans (Cape Cod) office, two days in the Hanover office, and one day remote each week. Candidates should reside within a feasible commuting distance to both locations. The firm values team members passionate about ecological restoration and sustainable design.
