The Axel Group is seeking a Director of Surveying to join our client’s team in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. This firm is a privately owned, mid-sized surveying and geospatial firm with a long-standing presence in the industry and a track record of steady, organic growth. Since conception, the company has grown from a small team into an organization of approximately 350 employees, expanding into new markets alongside major development partners while maintaining surveying as the core of its business.
The Director of Surveying will play a key leadership role in establishing and growing the firm's Dallas/Fort Worth-area operations. This individual will oversee surveying and land development projects throughout the region, including work tied to a major, multi-decade master-planned development, while helping build the local team, strengthen client relationships, and expand the firm's presence throughout the Texas market.
This is an opportunity for an experienced Texas Registered Professional Land Surveyor (RPLS) to step into a highly visible leadership position backed by an established organization, existing project pipeline, experienced surveying resources, and leadership support.
Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee surveying and geospatial projects throughout the Texas market, with a strong initial focus on large-scale land development and master-planned community projects.
- Manage projects from initiation through completion, including scope, budgets, schedules, staffing, deliverables, quality control, and overall client satisfaction.
- Serve as a key point of contact for clients, developers, engineers, contractors, and other project stakeholders, maintaining strong relationships throughout the project lifecycle.
- Help build and develop the firm's Texas operation, including supporting the growth of local field and office teams as project demand increases.
- Provide leadership and technical oversight to survey crews, CAD technicians, project managers, and other surveying professionals.
- Review survey data, plans, plats, legal descriptions, and project deliverables to ensure accuracy, quality, and compliance with applicable Texas surveying standards and regulations.
- Partner with company leadership to identify and pursue new business opportunities throughout Texas, developing relationships with developers, engineering firms, contractors, and other potential clients.
- Represent the firm within the local surveying, engineering, development, and construction communities through business development and professional networking.
- Leverage existing client relationships and project opportunities while helping diversify and expand the firm's Texas client base.
- Develop project budgets, schedules, staffing plans, and resource requirements; monitor performance and implement adjustments as needed.
- Identify project and operational risks and develop solutions to protect project scope, schedule, budget, and client relationships.
- Establish and implement best practices, quality standards, and processes as the Texas operation continues to grow.
- Collaborate closely with company leadership and established teams in other markets to utilize existing technical resources, expertise, and operational support.
Qualifications
- Active Texas Registered Professional Land Surveyor (RPLS) license required.
- 5+ years of survey project management experience.
- Strong background in team leadership and client relationship management preferred.
- Experience supporting land development, master-planned communities, or other large-scale development projects strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to participate in business development, networking, and client relationship building.
- Strong knowledge of Texas surveying standards, regulations, and professional requirements.
- Ability to lead teams while remaining involved in the technical and operational aspects of project delivery.
- Experience within the energy sector is a plus but not required.
- Strong communication, organizational, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
