The Axel Group is seeking a Survey Crew Chief to join our client's team. The Survey Crew Chief will lead field survey operations for a variety of land development, commercial, municipal, transportation, and infrastructure projects. This role involves overseeing daily field activities, operating advanced surveying equipment, mentoring survey team members, and ensuring projects are completed safely, accurately, and efficiently.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead daily field survey operations, supervising Instrument Operators and field personnel.
  • Perform boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS, construction stakeout, as-built, and utility surveys.
  • Operate and maintain surveying equipment, including robotic total stations, GPS/RTK systems, laser scanners, data collectors, and digital levels.
  • Collect, review, and organize field data, notes, sketches, photographs, and coordinate files for office processing.
  • Perform field calculations and adjustments to support construction layout and project requirements.
  • Coordinate closely with Project Managers, Survey Technicians, and office staff to meet quality standards and project timelines.
  • Maintain survey equipment, company vehicles, and field inventory, ensuring proper calibration and readiness.
  • Communicate professionally with clients, contractors, property owners, and project stakeholders.
  • Ensure all work complies with company quality standards and safety protocols.
  • Assist in training junior field staff and promote best practices and continuous improvement.

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of progressive land surveying experience, including leadership of survey crews.
  • Proficiency operating modern surveying equipment such as GPS/RTK, robotic total stations, data collectors, and related technology.
  • Strong understanding of boundary, topographic, construction, ALTA/NSPS, and utility surveying.
  • Ability to interpret plans, plats, deeds, construction documents, and engineering drawings.
  • Excellent organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and active construction sites.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • OSHA certifications, CST certification, LSIT, or other surveying certifications are a plus.

Compensation:
Hourly rate of $28 – $36 plus overtime eligibility, with an annual salary up to $75,000.
