Overview

The Axel Group is seeking a Staff Accountant for our client’s team. In this role, you will support accounting and administrative operations in a fast-paced, project-based construction environment by managing accounts payable, reconciliations, vendor maintenance, and key administrative tasks related to company accounts and fleet operations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform accounts payable processing, including invoice routing for approvals and verification against purchase orders, contracts, and subcontract agreements
  • Manage vendor payments and employee reimbursements, including reconciling vendor statements and researching outstanding balances
  • Support cash management and reconciliations, including bank reconciliations and positive pay functions
  • Import, code, and reconcile banking transactions
  • Reconcile company credit card statements and follow up on outstanding expenses and receipts
  • Assist with monthly account reconciliations and ensure accuracy of financial records
  • Reconcile accounts payable activity to the general ledger on a monthly basis
  • Prepare and distribute weekly intercompany reports to management
  • Administer fleet and vehicle administration, including maintaining accurate records of registrations, insurance documentation, and equipment/vehicle lists
  • Administer fuel card programs (ordering, replacing, canceling, monitoring cards) and monitor fuel usage/spending
  • Manage EZPass accounts (adding/removing vehicles and monitoring toll activity) and investigate discrepancies for fuel and toll charges
  • Maintain vendor management and compliance, including creating vendor files and collecting required documentation (W-9, 1099 status information, Certificates of Insurance)
  • Distribute tax-exempt certificates as needed
  • Complete and process credit applications for new vendors and suppliers
  • Provide administrative support, including reviewing incoming mail, maintaining organized accounting/administrative files, and assisting with special projects as needed

Requirements

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field (preferred)
  • 1–3 years of accounting, accounts payable, bookkeeping, or administrative experience (preferred)
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple deadlines
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Experience in construction, contracting, or a project-based environment is a plus
  • Experience with accounting software and ERP systems is preferred

Compensation

  • Salary: $65,000.00 (high)
