The Axel Group is seeking a Survey Crew Chief to join our client’s team in Somerset County, New Jersey. This multidisciplinary consulting firm specializes in civil engineering, planning, and infrastructure design, supporting both public and private sector clients. Their work spans municipal engineering, land development, transportation systems, water resources, and environmental services, with a strong emphasis on sustainable, community-focused solutions. The team collaborates closely with local governments and developers to deliver projects ranging from roadway improvements and utility upgrades to site design and regulatory compliance.
The Survey Crew Chief will lead field surveying operations, supervising a team to collect accurate land measurements and geospatial data for construction and engineering projects. This role ensures proper equipment use, data accuracy, and that fieldwork aligns with project specifications and safety standards.

  • Lead and supervise a survey field crew on a variety of projects, including boundary, topographic, construction stakeout, and as-built surveys, ensuring work is completed accurately and on schedule.
  • Perform precise field measurements using total stations, GPS equipment, and data collectors to gather reliable geospatial data for project deliverables.
  • Establish, recover, and verify survey control points and benchmarks to support accurate project layout and consistency across all phases of work.
  • Execute construction layout activities, including staking and marking, while verifying grades, alignments, and elevations in accordance with design plans and specifications.
  • Maintain detailed, accurate, and well-organized field notes, sketches, and electronic data to support office processing and final survey documentation.
  • Ensure all field operations are conducted safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company standards, project requirements, and applicable regulations.
  • Coordinate effectively with office staff and project managers regarding schedules, deliverables, and any field-related challenges or adjustments.
  • Review and validate field data for accuracy, completeness, and quality control prior to submission for processing.
  • Support the development of junior field staff by providing training, guidance, and mentorship in surveying techniques, equipment usage, and best practices.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s degree in a related field preferred
  • 5+ years of field surveying experience, including prior experience leading survey crews
  • Strong knowledge of land surveying principles, procedures, and equipment
  • Proficient in the use of total stations, GPS equipment, and data collectors
  • Ability to read and interpret survey plans, construction drawings, and specifications
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills
  • Highly attentive to detail and committed to accuracy and quality
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • New Jersey Surveying License is a plus but not required
